Ca de Bou | Great Watchdog | 2021

Breed Introduction

Ca de Bou is one of the breeds of the Bulldog. This is a purebred Bulldog, and basically from Majorca, Spain.

This breed is also known as the Majorcan Bulldog, Majorcan Mastiff, or the Perro de Presa Mallorquin.

They were kept on the island in history for blood sports like dog fighting and bull-baiting.

Some believe these dogs were likely developed between 1270 AD and 1570 AD during the Catalan influence period over Majorca.

It’s likely Mastiff dogs were their ancestors. Those were used for controlling the cattle on the island.

In the 18th century, blood sports like dog fighting and bull baiting were popular, and local people used to favor Ca de Bou for these sports.

But in the 20th century, bullfighting and bull-baiting were outlawed, and these breeds became unemployed and the numbers of these breeds began to decline and they were moving toward extinction.

Breed lovers from Spain began exhibiting them at the dog show and they were saved.

In the 1960s, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) officially recognized this breed, and the United Kennel Club (UKC) also recognized this breed as a guardian dog.

In the Spanish Language, these dogs are known as Perro de Presa Mallorquin.

In English, they are known as the Majorcan Bulldog or sometimes the Majorcan Mastiff.

In the Catalan language, they are known as Ca de Bou.
